Extreme violence in a particularly dark future, as seen through the eye's of a cyborg rebuilt from wreckage. A large part of the fun coming from Alita's rediscovery of her past, and determination of her future. The environment centers around the floating city of Tiphares, assumed to be a utopia, and the brutal junkyard built from the refuse (and needs) of Tiphares that exists below it. The individual stories explore the personalities to be found in this world and expand in scope as alita herself grows. And since Alita, as a combat cyborg, both finds and defines herself through action there is a lot of impressive action scenes in various environments. This is a worthy piece of work with a believable world, great characters and interesting core and sub-plots. The conclusion is complete and satisfying, and unifies the whole series into a strong whole (although some complain it was rushed). One of the nicest things about the series is that since the lead is a warrior, but can't remember why, she is free to grow into a more complete person and interact with the other characters. Also, since she is a cyborg, she doesn't always win the fights in which she must engage, a freedom not open with a human character who would realistically die under these situations. The world is well realised, the technology is believable and the artwork is excellent.
