Title Info
The anime answer to rocky? This anime follows a young, energetic and frighteningly physical school girl as she seeks fame in women's wrestling. Sadly a mistimed move cripples various members of the judging panel and she finds her future plans in trouble. However a shady coach is keen to encourage her to make her debut, but is it really wrestling he has in mind? Ayane, and her best friend schoolmate, is quite cute and interesting, but the fight scenes are brutal and revolve around the rocky formula of getting your lights punched out for 5 minutes then winning through `guts'. Watching a young girl stagger around the ring is a form of entertainment I never want to see in real life, since they don't wear head protection (As is legally required in Aus., Thank god) and such is the result of cerebral bruising, ick. Still, the very formulaic `training' scenes, beloved of all martial films, are fun and well done and the fighting might well appeal to some. The animation is competent but in a somewhat older style, not amazingly impressive and the story is fairly predictable, as is the dialogue. Still, bonus points (unwillingly dragged from me) for the fight scene's actually being honest, as opposed to the `clean' version often shown in anime. Akemi's AnimeWorld also notices the echo's of rocky and comments on the brutal fights in this positive review. |
