Title Info
A wasted opportunity caused by poor writing and character design, which cannot be saved by Megumi Hayashibara or good animation. The base plot is a demonic race intruding on to earth, a young girl as saviour or source of damnation, and the human response to this threat. The problem is quickly evident, the damsel has a power that will get her into trouble (which she always does) and is then useless. The human team are from the shooting pop-gun's at godzilla school of logic and are in general so useless that we don't care about them. If it were not for a rebel from the demonic side, and a great number of saves, the series would be over in the first episode. There is a dark underplot, but the complete inability of `our' guys to even understand what is happening, let alone affect the outcome steals any interest. Also uses the `wonder-weapon of the week' that is forgotten the next week as a plot device, gack. Apparently there's only actually two volumes in the complete manga story. This may help explain why the story in the anime seems a bit `stretched'. The fine people at THEM are having none of it, calling this "one of the most intellegent series to come out in the last 10 years" and a rival to evangelion in this review. I think the fact that evangelion is still winning fans after this one has sunk out of site makes it clear which was really the more interesting of the two titles. |
