I feel so mean, this well animated (albeit older) movie tells an impressive and heartwarming story very much in the flavor of disney. There are some good characters and character moments and a strong environmental message. It is a pity that the script has some gaping plot holes and very cheesy dialog which destroy the whole movie. The plot concerns a marine biologist and his son finding a mysterious creature of the sea. Naturally, as scientists, they decide to raise it and then release it back into the sea. Of course they aim to keep it a secret, but both the forces of `evil' and `good' become aware of it, entrapping the innocent creature and his human protectors in the middle. The problem comes in that almost all the danger in the movie could have been easily avoided, that the people we are following appear to have a death wish and that all animals are apparently genius telepaths. Perhaps younger audiences (although at least one lovable sea creature gets graphically shot) or those willing to disregard any sort of reality for environmental mythology might enjoy it more.
