It is a rare fantasy anime that rises above the cliche elements so prevalent in this genre and while Emblem of Gude is not entirely successful it makes a valiant effort. We follow two female adventurers, one a noble (but impressively violent) swordswomen and the other a magician. They find themselves drawn into a sinister conspiracy which threatens both their own lives and the lives of those they have sworn to protect. The animation is reasonable, not brilliant, but sufficient to show us a fairly gritty fantasy environment with some quite brutal action. The story is reasonable, but somewhat ambiguous possibly due to the relatively short length of this anime.
