Title Info
It seems to me there are two ways to view this rather intense film. One would see the director thumbing his nose at the fans and proclaiming his autonomy by killing characters, driving them psychotic and being willfully obscure. The other would be to see the director trying to push anime to even more complex heights (and possibly failing in parts). The faith you have in the director will determine your enjoyment, because the film is really not that clear. The film also has two distinct parts, the first being the physical destruction of NERV (and the characters). The second part is the culmination of the genesis plan, although what actually occurs is very cryptic, far more so than the TV series ever was. The production values are good, but seem to degrade somewhat in the second half. The film is intense, moody and has explicit violence and a sense of futility and is definitely R material. I, personally, could have done without it and support an alternate sequence I heard mentioned on Usenet. This suggests watching the TV series to episode 24, the first half of this movie, and then the conclusion of the series. |
