Abstract:   A well respected anime studio. There material is always interesting, often very strong, and just as often a touch fragmented or variable.

Gainax make an interesting comparison piece to Clamp, as this studio is often described as `fanboys who made good'. Indeed this is the core of their very weird `Otaku no Video' which has some elements of self-reflection in it. I was not aware of it but supposedly they develop a lot of computer software as well as anime, but not much of this escapes Japan. In addition they are known for doing anime, 'only when they feel like it' so their output is much smaller than both Clamp and Ghibli. That said they are very willing to experiment with complex stories and ambitious themes which produces some very interesting work. This is not to say you will like all their work, or all the aspects, but their work often tends to be very interesting. I would have to say, in all fairness, that Evangelion has catapulted them to star status in the west, although many fans find their other titles to have strong values of their own.
