Abstract:   A very well respected anime studio that focuses on making movies for
cinematic release. They have a good number of impressive titles cementing
their position.
Perhaps not the largest production studio, but with a master like Hayao Miyazaki at
the helm (and selecting the people and projects they do) they have produced a
body of work of such quality and distinctiveness that it can be considered as
unique. This is enhanced by the fact that they focus on high quality, feature
length animation using a permanent staff of ridiculously talented people. From
writing to animation to production to music their love of animation is evident.
This material is (I believe) very well known and respected in Japan and the world
distribution rights to much of the material has just been purchased by Disney.
While the critical might argue that they cannot compete with Disney on pure
technical merit I feel no difficulty in asserting that these stories have a depth,
charm and sense of immersion that Disney wishes it could acheive (perhaps the
animators more than the marketeer's). Check out the Ghibli homepage at Nausicaa.net for a lot more information, both historical and current, in a well designed and actively maintained web page. Written: Mon Feb 19 20:06:48 EST 2001 |
