Abstract:   Original Animation Video. A product sold direct to video. Intended to stand between TV and movie quality, but highly variable.

Almost always written as OAV, and often as OVA, this stands for Original Animation Video. What it means in practice is an animation product released directly for home sale. Historically it fell somewhere between TV and Movies in the amount of time and money spent in production, although quality is variable. In general an OAV is a series, with 4-8 episodes being common, although there are no shortage of one shots which are often experiments, specialised or pilots. At the current time money spent on anime in Japan is contracting, with serious results on the viability of the OAV market, leading to the partial replacement by short run (13 episode) TV series.
