Anime is, in practice, a western term for animation produced in Japan. Thus it can be seen as a specific subset of the more general term animation. Since many anime fans find western animation brain damaged the distinction is often rabidly defended. The main difference from western animation is in the volume produced and the width of topics covered. Thus the animation fan might find such things as the Disney stable technically excellent compared to most anime (which is valid) but will have only a handful of movies (often childish) to enjoy compared to a massive number of anime titles to explore. Since this is an anime (and manga) page it is no suprise that I encourage you to explore this field.
