Abstract:   A fan produced manga, often based on a professional work and sometimes
containing erotic content.
A Doujinshi is an amateur manga using characters from a mainstream anime or manga show. Thus this is the manga counterpart of fan-fiction. As with fan fiction a lot of it is hentai material, or parody, or both. This is copyright infringement under the western mindset, and the berne convention, but is a semi-accepted practice in Japan. Of course this fact limits the ability to distribute this material in the west, so examples can be hard to find. An interesting example of doujinshi as semi-accepted is in the Fushigi Yugi graphic novel from Viz (in the authors chatty side-bar) where she asks for copies of doujinshi from her work. |
