Glossary Entry : dub-titled |

Abstract:   The situation where the sub-titled version is simply the script of
the dubbed version. A negative term.
A relatively new word, but possibly an increasingly important one. The fight between the Otaku's preference for sub-titled and the market preference for dubbed has been going on a long time. One of the best arguments against dubbing is that because it has to match the mouth movements of the character, something not true of a sub-title, the material is further modified from the closest translation. This word comes from the practice, becoming increasingly popular on DVD's, of simply using the dub-script as the source for the sub-titles, even though the modifications are no longer neccessary. Thus serious Otaku consider this a half-hearted offering at best. |
