There exists an intersection between wanna-be writers and hard-core fans which produces amateur stories based on anime and manga. The quality is highly variable and maintaining the style and flavor of the original is considered optional. There is a lot of this material around, but organized repositories and ratings are rare, enhanced by the fact that most sites are run by authors keen to highlight their own work. See the Animation Turnpike for many starting points. In addition be warned that certain popular series with large casts are the most frequent targets by far. There is also a lot of material, generally called a `lemon', which is to some extent pornographic. Be warned that seeing your beloved anime character played with can be suprisingly disagreeable, and you'll only know after you have read the story. The comic equivalent of a fan work would be called a doujinshi.
