Abstract:   The Japanese version of the `manufactured' and short lived pop-star.

This is a really interesting concept that shows up quite often in anime. The interesting thing is that it has both positive and negative connotations. In general it refers to a young (generally female?) singer and dancer who becomes a media star. The positive connotation is of popularity, cuteness and a young person acheiving their dreams. The negative connotation is of manufactured, artificial and short lived popularity. The idea having a word for this phenomenon seems to indicate an interesting `awareness' of how the process works. The same thing certainly occurs in the west (simply turn on any mainstream music show for examples) but I don't know of one word that sums the situation up as completely.
