 		    Abstract:   This is material intended for children. This doesn't mean it's childish by western standards however. It doesn't seem to imply a gender discrimination.

This is the Japanese word for `child', but it is also used as a demographic description for manga and anime. As such it works alongside the terms shounen, shoujo and seinen. In this case it means product intended for an audience of young children. The word itself does not seem to imply either male or female children, although whether this is true of the word as a demographic description is unclear.
