Abstract:   A now largely obsolete media on which a lot of anime, especially early material,
is stored in a serious anime collectors library.
Mind you, you can probably still get into trouble saying stuff like this, because the Laserdisc fans tended to be serious AV freaks or dedicated anime fans and neither of these segments take challenges well. In any case while the media format was quite successful in Japan, and moderately successful in America, it never managed to get any significant presence in Australia. And it is almost certain that the advent of the DVD, which offers many of the benefits of LD, has doomed the media to obsolescence. Even so, you may still run into one the media, recognisable as looking like a huge (vinyl album sized) and thick CD-ROM. The generally tend to hold `old' anime releases and probably had a sizable cost when originally purchased. Thus for an anime historian or completeness buff finding an old stack of LD's can be a very happy occassion. |
