Abstract:   The Japanese term for `comics'. That is, stories told through both images and text.

Manga is generally taken to mean "irresponsible pictures", but at least one source I came across questioned this intepretation. Anyway, to the western fan it means japanese printed material constructed from captioned drawings. In general manga is the basis for anime, with most stories being developed in manga before being animated, although this may be changing. The vast majority of manga is black and white, although complex line work and textures make this more complex than it sounds. This material is widely translated amongst asian countries and rarely translated in the west, although perhaps the percentage is growing. Manga translation involves flipping the pages (japanese books are read in the reverse page order), re-drawing the sound effects and translating and re-lettering the text and is a sizable amount of work.
