The Japanese word meaning something along the lines of `at home' used to suggest someone so into their hobby that they don't have a life. As such it is a derogatory term, roughly equivalent to `nerd', and as such should be used with care. Of course some anime fans are happy to borrow the term and use it as an expression of pride in their intense interest in anime, thus you will hear people calling themselves Otaku.
