 		    Abstract:   Japanese term for "young male". Used mostly as a demographic indicator

This word indicates material aimed at a male audience. Please see the companion word `shoujo' for a comment that most works draw from both fields and it is only really safe to use this word for the authors and publishers intended audience. As a genre shounen is considered to specialise in action, often with a fantasy bent although sports manga is (I believe) also very common (although rarely translated for the western market).
