Sounds a lot like a magical girl series, and has most of the staples of the genre, but the focus and plot is definitely shoujo material. It turns out that the test for promotion to the throne of the magical land is to make a practical magic item and allow an earthling (who must look like the donor) to test it out in secret for a year. The princess runs out of time and thus picks Hime-chan, who is very cute but tomboyish and somewhat unsubtle, to test out her item, a ribbon that lets you take the form of another person. Hime-Chan immediately uses it for to move her romantic plans forward, and then has to continue using it to repair the damage. The series is done in a simple but clean style, looks perhaps a bit dated, but has very good character animation (and isn't that the point?). The writing is well done, has a great sense of character and can be touching. In addition because there are no monsters or evil forces the story is not purely episodic, which just enhances the depth. The creature companion, a side-effect of the magical ribbon, is not visually cute but is an active character. If you can cope with an older series, a serious hit of cute shojo and and following the slow maturing of a young girl over a long story arc this is really worth checking out.

There is a short, but positive review at anime genesis.
