This took a while to complete, as most shops seemed to have piles of 1 and 3 but volume 2 being rare. This older manga series chronicles the story of Mai, a young girl with psychic power that has been passed through the generations to protect a region in Japan. Sadly the secret is out with the evil wisdom alliance having discovered how to detect this power (in Mai and others) and being interested in acquiring them for their own purposes. For Mai this means that her life of safety is over, and that a power she had used only for entertainment is now considered a desirable weapon. The story has some good character work, with Mai being very cute, but this is dominated by a lot of action. This starts out subtle but quickly builds up to an impressive scale before the story concludes. The body count is fairly high by the conclusion and the violence is graphic. In some ways it is a shame that the action is allowed to dominate over story and character as the characters seem to have much more to offer. The drawings are very nice with a quite detailed appearance and a very good touch for people, although this artistic style seems more suited to character than action. There is some nudity, but the violence is more likely to be an issue for the sensitive. Also note that volume 1 contains more character work, while 2 and 3 are increasingly action, which suggests you browse multiple volumes before making the decision to purchase.
