This material seems far too variable to be a classic, but it does some interesting stuff and shows some promise. I believe that the primary creator (Kia Asamiya) admitted defeat and as a result various other writers guest star, which may contribute to the variability. This is enhanced by the huge cast, including the cast in an anime (Gekiganger 3) that various members of the Nadesico crew are fans of. Watching anime characters watch anime is quite weird. The plot itself is sci-fi with evil robotic alien bugs having humanity on the defensive, through which the privately owned battleship Nadesico and its weird crew have various adventures. The animation is somewhat messy, seemingly having low frame rates (especially in the mech battles) and some chaotic line work, but nothing disastrous. The strength's of the series are the characters, some humor and also quite good design work for the world in which it takes place. The conclusion to the series is interesting, with the plot twists coming fast and furious and one or two interesting suprises, although there is still a feeling of some chaos in the development of the story.

The fine folks at THEM are fans of Ruri, somewhat disappointed by the conclusion but give the title a solid review. They also comment on the politics behind the series, and question ADV's marketing approach. Despite a fairly average rating, and lots of spoilters, Lord Carnage is clearly a fan. I must admit that I don't consider the comparison with `Irresponsible captain Tylor' useful (although THEM did it as well). As I mentioned, skip over the synopsis to check out the review.
