While this manga series runs parallel to the OAV and TV series, it is of the same period, style and retains the same characters. Much like the Evangelion novels this ends up allowing the strengths of Manga and Anime to extend each other without boring us with a slavish re-telling of a familiar story. And with characters this unique there is always more to learn about them. Of course if you didn't like the anime there's a reasonable chance you won't like the manga. I personally found that this manga, being character rather than story based, has aged gracefully under many re-readings. I have a serious suspicion that this title is in hibernation, Viz has not released a new GN for a goodly time, (sob).
