The heritage of this episode is sufficiently interesting that I have given it a seperate heading. In theory it was the planned conclusion to the television series but was with-held from broadcast. Many fans take this to mean that this is a conclusion episode, and the with-holding promises more TV Rurouni Kenshin. On seeing the episode I am even more confused, it being a somber and quiet atmosphere piece in which certain relationships are hinted at. The thing is that these relationships are absolutely no suprise to anyone who has watched the preceeding episodes. In addition there is relatively little dialog, and the actions are far from conclusive. If you were hoping for proposals or florid declarations of everlasting love then you will be disappointed. Also strange is that the production differs from that of the TV series, for example using live footage in various parts (which is not successfully integreated) and having a somewhat different look. This seems to suggest that the decision not to produce it as a TV episode was made quite early, and that it was finished on the basis of an OAV sale (which is what happened). Of course those of us addicted to the subtle personal interactions of kenshin are going to like this, as are those desperate to see their hero's one more time, but I doubt it holds wider appeal. If you don't know kenshin or just like the fighting then don't bother.
