Sold by Viz as `no need for tenchi' (one of the translations of Tenchi Muyo?) this manga continues on from where the first OAV series ends. All the characters we know and love from the OAV are back in a new series of largely earthbound adventures. This includes, in the volumes I have, some longer stories as well as small episodic adventures, such as Mihoshi getting her driving license. Indeed volume three includes two stories of magical girl pretty sammy which helped set the seed for that series. Sadly the manga is flawed (in ways not entirely different from the second OAV series) because the attempts to be light-hearted and humorous, combined with the simple short stories, make the manga feel very light-weight. This is enhanced by the art work which spends a lot of time in SD mode, in a minimal mode (almost like sketches) and also chatting to the reader. This simply leads to a feeling of chaos and disjointedness. Mind you there are some stories that do work, and the artwork occassionally throws up some nice images and scenes, but not in sufficient number to overcome the feeling that this manga was more an attempt to capitalise on the popularity of the OAV rather than a fully realised product in its own right.
