The fourth Urusei Yatsura film which attempts to launch a credible challenge to Beautiful Dreamer as the strangest UY film of all time. I have read that this film was unpopular with japanese audiences and I have to admit I can see why. The base plot appears to be the awakening of an ancient magic buried within the town of Tomobiki, but this largely seems to be an excuse for weird things to happen. This is not exactly unusual for UY, but these weird things are serious weird things, indeed almost tragic, which somewhat fights against the normal flavor of UY. A lot of this time is spent inside the dreams of various UY characters, which is some fun in itself but which is ultimately detrimental to the development and pace of the story. The generous will see this as a version of beautiful dreamer set within a nightmare, others will see it as a deep celebration of the UY spirit, but a lot of people (myself included) are going to consider it a bit of a mess. The animation is different from the earlier movies with a lot of colors and some attempts to get a more complex use of highlight colors, although it still looks dated and the animation is not always consistant.
