What the world needs is more characters like Ai in romantic anime. The combination of energy and depth she provides animates this classy tale of a love rectangle. The video girl in the title relates to the fact that she was summoned from playing a video (received under strange circumstances) and is meant to be the perfect girl to comfort the heart-broken in their time of need. Of course the fact that she is beautiful and sensitive in her own right makes you wonder exactly how well her creators understood the problem they are trying to solve. This is complicated further by the fact that she was played on a defective VCR and thus is slightly less than perfect, but a lot more fun (It came as no suprise to find Megumi Hayashibara provides Ai's voice, she is just too good at these sort of roles - nuku nuku! lina! lime!). If you were wanting action and suspense give this one a miss, but if you are in the mood for something to play with your emotions, with a side order of humor, then you will not be disappointed. The saddest part is that the ending feels a bit rushed and inconclusive (and perhaps a bit heavy on the symbolism) but this may be due to the fact that it only covers a couple of volumes from a much larger manga (which Viz is currently serializing, yay!). In fact, having got volume 1 of the Viz manga it appears that most of the OAV is contained in the first volume!i

There is a fair but critical review from the anime critic who critises the overly rapid conlusion and moemi being underdeveloped as a character
